The Dust Problem: Why Clay Litter Makes Your Cat Cough
Silica dust, respiratory irritation, and the invisible cloud that fills your laundry room every scoop.
- Bentonite clay is milled from strip-mined rock — the process leaves behind fine crystalline silica.
- Every pour, every scoop, and every dig releases particles small enough to reach the lower lungs.
- Cats groom with their tongues, so what settles on their fur ends up in their gut too.
- NEKO is pressed from food-grade tofu fiber — the particle size is 40–60× larger than clay dust.
- No crystalline silica. No airborne cloud when you pour. The bag literally does not puff.
- Vet-tested for cats with asthma, kittens, and post-surgical recovery.
Why clay dust is different from ordinary house dust
Crystalline silica is classified as a Group 1 carcinogen for humans by the IARC. In clay litter it appears as sub-10-micron particles that bypass the nose and settle deep in alveolar tissue. In an enclosed laundry room or bathroom, one pour can spike PM2.5 readings for 20+ minutes.
What that looks like in a cat
Chronic clay exposure is linked to feline lower airway disease — the coughing fits owners often mistake for hairballs. Kittens and senior cats are the most vulnerable because their airways are smaller and their immune systems less resilient.
Why tofu litter doesn't have this problem
Tofu pellets are cold-extruded from pea fiber, corn starch, and soybean residue. The grain is soft, uniform, and — critically — too large to aerosolize. When you pour NEKO, gravity is the only thing that happens. No cloud, no cough, no film on the shelf above the box.
Common questions
Is 'low-dust' clay actually low dust?
It's lower than standard clay, but the industry test only measures particles above 10 microns. The particles that reach the lungs are smaller than that — and they still come off the pellets.
Can I mix NEKO with my old clay?
You can, but you'll re-introduce the dust you were trying to leave. A one-week full transition works better than a slow mix.
